NHS 10-year plan Statement

The Government’s new ten-year plan for the NHS, published on 3rd July 2025, places emphasis on providing treatment and care closer to home.  Kidney Cancer UK CEO, Malcolm Packer, said:

We welcome this initiative, which we hope will enhance the level of local support for kidney cancer patients during, especially following treatment.

Our latest annual patient survey, published in February, showed that local follow-up during and after treatment for kidney cancer is inadequate. After discharge, 57.3% of patients said their GP had not contacted them to offer follow-up support. A further 11.5% said their GP took more than 5 weeks to make contact with them. So, we are seeing a disconnect between patients and their GPs following a kidney cancer diagnosis; this plan should improve this.

Local services for kidney cancer patients must be integrated with a full range of diagnosis, treatment and care services provided in centres of excellence.  This must ensure people at risk of kidney cancer are picked up early, diagnosed quickly and treated effectively, whilst receiving constant care and support for their holistic needs.

We anticipate learning more about the future of NHS cancer services in the forthcoming Cancer Plan and the impact this will have on the implementation of the NICE clinical guideline on kidney cancer, when it is published.  In the meantime, we are looking forward to working with NHS cancer services at all levels as we move towards the new ambitions for the NHS set out in this ten-year plan.
