On March 19th 2026, NICE (The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) published the first-ever kidney cancer guidelines. This was the result of almost 10 years of research, lobbying, and hard work by the team at Kidney Cancer UK, led by an eminent team on our Kidney Cancer UK Accord. Our thanks go to all members for their dedication and support in achieving this, along with our industry sponsors.
The NICE Quality Standard for Kidney Cancer Diagnosis and Management complements the Guideline. It shows six priority areas in which improvements can be made, as selected by NICE. Each standard includes a set of statements to help improve quality and information on how to measure progress.
The documents on this page represent the culmination of that work and are available for patients, family members, and healthcare professionals to use from day one in their treatment pathways.
Please note that these NICE Kidney Cancer Guidelines and the NICE Quality Standards apply to England and Wales only.

NICE has also summarised the guideline in a series of diagrams. To read these, please click on the image or the link next to the information to open interactive PDFs which contain active links you can follow:

A more detailed summary of the management of localised kidney cancer
Summarised diagnosis and management of kidney cancer for people who have a genetic or family history that may increase their risk of kidney cancer. This generally affects between 3% and 8% of people with kidney cancer. If you are unsure whether you have such a risk, please consult you doctor or clinical nurse specialist.
