Currently based at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow, Gren brings a wealth of experience of NHS Scotland along with his knowledge of the Scottish kidney cancer landscape to our Board of Trustees.
Starting as an undergraduate in Edinburgh, Gren trained in general surgery in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne before completing an MD the University of London. He returned to Scotland in 2002 where he completed his urological training.
He has an interest in renal cancer and minimally invasive surgical treatments, is a member of the NCRI (National Cancer Research Institute) Renal Cancer Surgical subgroup and is involved with several national and international medical trials. Gren has previously chaired the West of Scotland Managed Clinical Network for Urological Cancers and, with three colleagues, provided tertiary referral services for the West of Scotland.
Grant Stewart was trained as an academic surgeon at the University of Edinburgh, becoming Senior Lecturer and Group Leader of the Edinburgh Urological Cancer Group in 2013. In 2015, he moved to Cambridge where, in 2020, he became Professor of Surgical Oncology and has a focus on developing and promoting surgery-related clinical trials and translational research. As a urological surgeon, Grant has a specific interest in optimising the management of patients with initially localised renal cancer, by the development of early detection and optimal peri-surgical management. In 2016, Grant developed the robotic kidney surgery programme in Cambridge and led the development of the multi-speciality robotic surgery programme, which commenced in 2023. Grant is Director of the CRUK Cambridge Centre Urological Malignancies Virtual Institute and Integrated Cancer Medicine Institute. He is passionate about clinical and academic training and Director of the Academic Clinical Fellow Programme in Cambridge, one of the UK’s largest ACF programme. He is Deputy Editor of The Surgeon and Associate Editor of British Journal of Urology International. Grant is a trustee of Kidney Cancer UK. In terms of policy change, Grant is Clinical Director of the National Kidney Cancer Audit, Clinical Lead for the NICE Kidney Cancer Guideline and Chair of the Getting It Right First Time Kidney Cancer Pathway.
Maxine has been interested in kidney cancer ever since her first post as a junior doctor in a urology department over two decades ago. She developed a special interest in rare inherited kidney cancer syndromes and was awarded a competitive MRC clinical training fellowship for her PhD research at Imperial College London (2003-6). Maxine completed her specialist surgical training in Urology as a clinical lecturer at Cambridge University Hospitals and was appointed a Senior Lecturer in Urology at University College London. Maxine was promoted to her current position as Professor of Urology at UCL in 2022 and undertakes clinical work as an Honorary Visiting Consultant at Cambridge University Hospitals.
Maxine’s research is dedicated to improving the knowledge of the biology underlying kidney cancer. This will ultimately translate to earlier diagnoses, better management and wider treatment options for patients.
She has been awarded grants from the National Institute for Health and Care Research, CRUK, MRC, Academy of Medical Sciences, Addenbrookes’ Charitable Trust, Kidney Cancer UK, Facing up 2 Kidney cancer, The Royal Free Hospital Charity, St Peter’s Trust.
Berkeley GreenwoodBerkeley is a government relations adviser who specialises in healthcare policy. He has a background as a political researcher and was twice a parliamentary candidate. An economist by training, he has a particular interest in healthcare access and cost efficacy issues and the policy debate that underlies these. His previous work in this area includes renal disease.
Dr Boleti is a consultant medical oncologist with a special interest in lung cancer and other thoracic malignancies as well renal cell carcinoma. She is also interested in novel therapies such as immunotherapy and new molecular targeted agents.
Nicholas Cox has been a chancery barrister since 1992. As a member of the Attorney General’s ‘A’ Panel of Counsel he also advises and represents the Government in high value and sensitive disputes and sits as an arbitrator. He has an MA in Law from St Edmund Hall, Oxford and an MBA from Warwick Business School. In his spare time he runs the field archery club in Surrey where he shoots with James Whale MBE.
Chris acts as Financial Advisor to the Board of Trustees. He is a chartered accountant bringing a wealth of experience from the public and private sectors, as well as charity finance. Chris is the finance director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation and its subsidiary companies.
Consultant in Clinical Oncology, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Central Lancashire
Dr. Natalie Charnley obtained her medical degree from the University of Edinburgh medical school, where she also obtained a Bsc(Hons) in immunology. She did her oncology training in London and Leeds. Her MD at the University of Manchester Wolfson Molecular Imaging Centre, investigated PET markers of tumour biology and response to anticancer treatment.
Dr. Charnley has been a Consultant Oncologist at Royal Preston Hospital for 14 years. She treats patients with kidney, bladder and prostate cancer. Her research interests include novel imaging to predict response in patients with renal cancer. She is a member of the NCRI renal systemic therapies group
Geraldine spent 18 years in the private sector before joining the Civil Service in 1998 and developed her skill set over a number of years to include IT support, business and project management, before becoming a Category Manager within the Crown Commercial Service, an executive agency of the Cabinet Office.
In 2014 Geraldine was diagnosed with kidney cancer and, following a nephrectomy, decided to take advantage of a voluntary exit scheme to allow her to care for a family member and, through Kidney Cancer UK, support other patients and carers.
Geraldine is very active in her voluntary work with the charity, being a member our Kidney Cancer UK Accord, leading our Patient Advisory Committees and actively sharing her own kidney cancer experience to help others. Geraldine will have a watching brief over all elements of patient engagement with the Charity
