Sofia's story: supporting Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

by | Sep 17, 2015 | Personal Stories - Blogs

This is little Sofia. In 2013, at the tender age of six months, Sofia was diagnosed with Wilms’ tumour.   The tumour had caused her previously-diagnosed reflux to worsen and despite her cot being raised and a high dose of reflux medication, Sofia was waking every twenty minutes during the night.  Sofia also bravely underwent surgery and chemotherapy: all this from the age of six months!image3
To help Sofia and her family, we awarded one of our kidney patient support grants. This enabled them to buy a RES-Q wedge, a special mattress designed to help improve reflux and therefore give Sofia a much more comfortable sleep. The grant also helped provide fun times with a swing!
Supporting this awareness month, Tina, Sofia’s mum said:

“September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we’ve been going GOLD for all the little poorly children, survivors and those angel babies on Facebook.”

And this week, we received the great news from Tina that Sofia’s three-month scans and x-rays were clear.  As you can see from the pictures, Sofia is a real and happy fighter!
