PUB LOCALS RAISE £1600 FOR RESEARCH INTO KIDNEY CANCER

Cheque handover The Exchequer Crookham

Pub regulars from local villages Dogmersfield and Crookham, presented a cheque for an impressive £1600 to Kidney Cancer UK – which recently combined with the Kidney Cancer UK making it the UK’s leading specialist kidney cancer charity – at The Exchequer in Crookham Village on Wednesday 16th October
This takes the total raised in the last eleven years to £32,401.  Conquering kidney cancer is very close to the locals’ hearts.  Andy Browne (who presented the cheque on behalf of the locals to Malcolm Packer from the Kidney Cancer UK), and Brian Toms have both suffered from the disease of which diagnoses have risen by a third in the past ten years in England.  It has been topical in the news recently with a national media campaign to drive awareness in helping to identify early symptoms of the disease.
Previous charities to benefit from the locals’ efforts have been Whizzkidz, who aim to improve the life of disabled children; Dorton House, a non-maintained special school that provides specialist education for blind children; Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, the UK’s largest adult and childhood brain tumour charity; St Michael’s Hospice in Basingstoke which provides specialist palliative care; Guildford Undetected Tumour Screening (G.U.T.S.), which improves the survival rate of people with bowel disease through early detection; Cancer Research and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), the world’s leading charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research.
The money was raised by way of a hog roast event in the garden of The Exchequer in August which featured an auction that featured lots all donated by villagers, including tickets and hospitality for a Manchester United Premier League match at Old Trafford and an England rugby union international at Twickenham.
