Inspiration behind Bake a Biscuit fundraising event in aid of kidney cancer

What inspired us to launch Bake a Biscuit –  fundraising event in aid of kidney cancer..

One of our team members has sadly been diagnosed with cancer just before Christmas, on a Christmas Eve. She is a brave little soul and at the moment is going through a course of chemotherapy with the signs of improvement. Unfortunately we will not see her in the office until late summer or autumn. She is getting better every day and we look forward to her coming back to the office..and bringing her famous oaty biscuits. She has often been bringing them for us to enjoy and she is an amazing baker! This has inspired us to start YOU BAKE A BISCUIT  fundraising event in aid of kidney cancer when everyone can join in and support the charity.

From 10th until 25th of May we would like to encourage you to bake some biscuits! Having baked them, take them either to work, school or invite friends round for a tea or coffee, asking them for a small donation for each biscuit eaten. Then donate the proceeds from the sale of the biscuits to Kidney Cancer UK. Don’t worry if you cannot or you feel you don’t have the time to make a batch, simply buy a packet or box from your favorite supermarket.

Once you decided to fundraise for us, it’s time to spread the word about your delicious biscuits! Use Twitter of Facebook..or both..to let us know what you are baking, your dunking routine or just post some yummy pictures! Use #JWFBiscuit.
Incentive
Everyone who donates £10 or more will be entered into a draw to win ‘Afternoon Tea for Two’ (the winner plus guest) in one of London’s most prestigious dining rooms with the charity’s President Lord Addington.
The deadline to send all the donations is Monday 9th of June. The winner will be chosen at random on Monday 16th June. The date of the ’Afternoon Tea for Two’ will be subject to availability.
Your money will help us develop our new Patients and Professionals Project – a New On-line Course for recently qualified GP’s and hospital registrars providing them with a further insight into the treatment of their patients diagnosed with Kidney Cancer. 3 years ago the Fund introduced an online training programme for nurses and since its launch has had over 3000 nurses registered.
There is, generally, less awareness of kidney cancer than other cancers such as breast or lung cancer. Yet, every year in the UK, more than 10,000 people learn that they have kidney cancer. Kidney cancer is now the seventh most common cancer in men and the ninth most common cancer in women. The escalation in kidney cancer cases has led to the government launching a nationwide campaign to raise awareness of one of the early signs of kidney cancer – blood in the urine – and to urge people to visit their GP if they exhibit this.
The Patients and Professionals Project Aims To

• increase awareness of kidney cancer amongst medical and health professionals
• contribute to the knowledge and understanding of kidney cancer amongst medical and health professionals, patients and their families and the general public
• raise the rates of early diagnosis
• improve the care of and for patients with kidney cancer
• help alleviate concerns and fears of patients and their families
• improve the outcome for patients with kidney cancer
