Help and support when I needed it
I was diagnosed with the rare kidney cancer condition, ‘von hippel lindau syndrome’ (VHL), in 2015 and the support I received from Kidney Cancer UK has inspired me to write this short blog.
Since my diagnosis of VHL I have undergone four brain surgeries, three eye surgeries and three kidney surgeries. I am a positive individual and always try to look forward each day as well as a proud person who rarely asks for help; but this time around, I had to ask.
Since losing both kidneys due to my condition, Kidney Cancer UK has provided me with the flexibility to now have home dialysis. They have been there for me as support over the phone through their free Careline, they have provided financial help in terms of buying storage for all my equipment and a medical trolley to store and organise all my daily equipment for home dialysis. I am truly thankful for the support they have given me which has allowed me to keep my independence as a young gentleman.
I’ve got the incredible support of a loving husband at home and together with support of charities like Kidney Cancer UK we can now continue our journey.
Today we use the strength from yesterday to fight the cancer tomorrow and my husband and I could not have done this without the support of our families, friends, Kidney Cancer UK and other charities which have given us this time to continue our love story which inspires so many; in both sickness and in health.
Thank you very much for all your help.
