Kidney Cancer Scotland Partners with Scottish Canoe Association to fight kidney cancer
Kidney Cancer Scotland are delighted to announce Canoe For A Cure ,their partnership with The Scottish Canoe Association in their annual Glasgow to Edinburgh canoeing Challenge.
The challenge takes place across two days, October 4 & 5, and will see canoeists challenged to paddle 54 miles between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Day one will see the paddlers travel 24 miles from the centre of Glasgow on the Forth & Clyde Canal from Speirs Warf, to the Falkirk Wheel. On day two they will continue on the Union Canal from above the Falkirk Wheel to Lochrin Basin, Edinburgh.
The organisers of the event, Brian and Margaret Chapman have run the event for over 20 years and for 2014 canoeist can either paddle alone or work in a team of up to 12, in singles, doubles or fours, kayaks or canoes. In previous years a wide range of canoes and kayaks have been used to complete the course, racing K1’s and K2’s by those looking for fast times; open Canadians; sea kayaks and even plastic river boats by those looking for more of a challenge.
The Open Team Relay class has a registration fee of £10 per person and allows up to 12 people to paddle in any combination of canoe and/or kayak. All funds raised will go to help Scottish kidney cancer patients.
The charities founder, Chairman and kidney cancer survivor, James Whale MBE, said; “We are delighted to be partnering with The Scottish Canoe Association for the Glasgow to Edinburgh Challenge. I’m not a hardened canoeist by any stretch of the imagination, let’s just say I’ve ‘dabbled’ and had fun. I do know Canoe For A Cure is going to be a fun event and if you are up for the challenge, sign up and in the process raise funds and promote early diagnosis of kidney cancer as well as helping us provide the support patients and their carers really need. We thank and wish all those taking part the best of luck in completing the challenge.”
Margaret Chapman said; “We are really looking forward to adding a new dimension to the event for 2014, attracting new participants and providing them with the opportunity to raise funds to support a very worthwhile cause. Our experiences of hundreds of participants over the years makes us confident that everyone will get a lot of enjoyment out of the challenge.”
