Berkeley is a government relations adviser who specialises in healthcare policy. He has a background as a political researcher and was twice a parliamentary candidate. An economist by training, he has a particular interest in healthcare access and cost efficacy issues and the policy debate that underlies these. His previous work in this area includes renal disease.
Prof Thomas Powles, Consultant Medical Oncologist
Professor Thomas Powles MBBS MD MRCP is a Senior Lecturer in Urological Malignancy at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. He trained in Medical Oncology at Imperial College, and his thesis focused on the mechanisms of resistance to chemotherapy and targeted therapy in urological cancers. He leads both a laboratory based group and clinical trials group, which run a number of national clinical trials in renal and bladder cancer. He is involved in national and international organisations in renal cancer including the NCRN, AUA, EORTC and ESMO.
James Whale, Chairman
He presented late night phone-in programmes on UK radio for several decades and recently hosted the drive time slot on London’s LBC radio station. James was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2000 and his experience of tackling the condition spurred him on to set up the charity six years later. He has been married to Melinda since 1970 and they have two sons, James and Peter.
Brings a wealth of experience to the Fund as a carer of a partner who was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Melinda’s world turned ‘upside down’ when James was diagnosed in 2000. Her experience dealing with the condition and its consequences made her determined to ensure that the best possible information was available for patients and carers in the future.
Professor Tim Eisen – Trustee
A Professor of Medical Oncology at Cambridge Tim’s my clinical responsibilities include the management of kidney cancer, melanoma and lung cancer at Addenbrooke’s and Papworth Hospitals. He was appointed Chairman of the NCRI Lung Clinical Studies Group in 2004 and was a Trustee of the original Kidney Cancer UK and we are delighted to have him join the new team.
Pat Hanlon – Trustee
Pat became a member of the original Kidney Cancer UK in 2005 and was appointed as a Trustee with them in February 2007. Since that time Pat has been kept very busy with kidney cancer campaigning activities and we welcome him to the new Kidney Cancer UK.
Nicholas Cox, Barrister
Nicholas Cox has been a chancery barrister since 1992. As a member of the Attorney General’s ‘A’ Panel of Counsel he also advises and represents the Government in high value and sensitive disputes and sits as an arbitrator. He has an MA in Law from St Edmund Hall, Oxford and an MBA from Warwick Business School. In his spare time he runs the field archery club in Surrey where he shoots with James Whale.
Surgeon Commander Jonathan Perry – Consultant Radiologist
Surgeon Commander Jonathan Neil Perry MB ChB BA(Open)Hons FRCR RN is a Consultant Radiologist in the Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit in Peterborough. Jon has a special interest in interventional radiology, vascular intervention, uroradiology and is experienced in many radiological modalities, including plain film, fluoroscopy, nuclear medicine, ultrasound and CT.
Jon currently holds a post as a Recognised Clinical Teacher for Cambridge University Medical School. His military career has involved working as a medical officer on board a nuclear submarine and consequently provided him with a detailed knowledge of occupational medicine, together with teaching him the importance of teamwork. Recently Jon’s military career has seen him in active service is Kosovo, Kuwait and Afghanistan.
Socially Jon is a keen Lawn Tennis player and follower of England Rugby Team. He is also the conductor of the parents’ choir of Kings’ College School in Cambridge.
Chris Thomas FCA
Chris acts as Financial Advisor to the Board of Trustees. He is a chartered accountant bringing a wealth of experience from the public and private sectors, as well as charity finance. Chris is the finance director of the Retail Motor Industry Federation and its subsidiary companies.
